Our Project
One of our goals at Abor Diaspora Inc, is to carry out projects in Abor that target the areas of education; healthcare; and rural development. Currently, there are a host of well-meaning individuals and other non-profit organizations such as Umu Ada Abor (Sweet Sisters); Ifeadika Ada Abor; A Ray of Light Foundation; Maria Regina focused on improving the schools and providing Medical Missions and health educations to Abor people. Those providing medical missions were not using the Maternity and Health Center but mostly using the Elementary School facility due to the deplorable state of the Maternity and Health Center.
In light of this, we realized there is an urgent need to turn our focus to renovating the Maternity and Health Center buildings. Considering that the Maternity and the Health Center building are within the same complex and based on what it will cost to renovate those two facilities, we decided that it’s best to combine the two facilities and upgrade it to a small community hospital which will serve not only the Abor people but the neighboring towns.
The History
In 1957, Abor Development Union set out to build a Cottage Hospital in Abor; however, due to other pressing urgent need to build infant (Nursery) classrooms for St. Peters Elementary Schools, the plan was scuttled and they ended up with a Maternity instead. Subsequently, a Health Center was built within the same complex as the maternity. The Health Center building consisted of eight-bed ward and an administrative section.
In 1988, the Abor Development Union requested the Government to elevate the Health Center to a Cottage hospital. The requested was granted after several years by the then Commissioner for Health for the State under Okwesilieze Nwodo. Unfortunately, before he could send staff and equipment needed for the effective running of the Cottage Hospital, he was dropped as a Commissioner. Thereafter, the Health Center never fully become a Cottage Hospital.
Our Journey
On July 20, 2019, we held our first Convention/Fundraising in Los Angeles California to raise the needed funds for the Community Hospital. We are happy to say that the result was outstanding; however, it will take a lot of money to embark on a project of this magnitude. We also realize that “A journey of million miles starts with the first step” and we have taken that first bold step and we will continue look for more funding/donations from friends of Abor and Abor Individuals to complete the much needed Community Hospital.
